One of the plants featured in my book ‘Unexpectedly Edible’ is the Fuchsia.
These plants are grown for their enchanting flowers that look like ballerinas twirling en pointe with skirts floating in the breeze.
They are among my very favourite plants and flowers, I have fond memories of a Fuchsia planted outside my bedroom window in my childhood home.
They grow very well in temperate parts of Australia and also grow well in parts of New Zealand, where I grew up. They can flower sporadically throughout the year.

After the flowers fade, a ‘berry’ ( I’m going to call it a berry as I haven’t made the effort to check what it technically is, sorry…) forms on the stem.
What people don’t realise often, is that this ‘berry’ is edible!
When it is fully ripened it can be picked and used to make jams (you’d need a lot though) or even added to a fruit salad. They don’t have a very strong taste but have a nice texture.

There are more interesting facts about common plants you may have in your garden that you could eat in my book ‘Unexpectedly Edible, Common plants you could eat (if you had to)’. This is available as an ebook on Amazon and GooglePlay ( search the title). If a printed copy is more your thing, message me on theflowerpotpen.com . Printed copies are $10au +p&h.

Til next time!
